Can you tell the difference between a broad loop and a shag? And when it comes to pile, is deeper better? Find out with our simple guide to carpet types

It's a funny thing about carpets in that most of us walk on them every day, and could willingly describe the texture and feel of them beneath our feet - but when pushed, would probably have to admit to not knowing whether we'd just walked over a deep pile carpet or a large family dog.So, in order to increase your knowledge of the carpet world - and save poor Spot some unnecessary trampling on - we've put together an easy guide to loops, piles and textures.

Carpet Trained

Starting with the best-selling type of carpet, Cut Pile means that looped carpet fibers are cut at the top, making them crush-resistant and with the added bonus of a luxe look when the cut pile is pre-sheared a few times. Next up is Saxony, with this style of carpet consisting of tightly twisted cut piles that are heat-set straight, providing a soft texture. Textured Saxonies are another best-seller and are a great option for family rooms and kid's bedrooms because of its soft feel. And importantly, their multi-colored look hides tracks and footprints. On to Velvet Plush carpets, which are lightly twisted, softer and more level than textures and the Freize style, which means a highly twisted cut pile carpet that's best suited for high traffic areas in the home, such as hallways and entrance halls. Cut and Loop piles are next, and as the name suggests, combines cut and looped fibers for medium durability. Level Loop Pile is made by weaving even loops of yarn into carpet backing at both ends, creating a very durable product with a highly luxurious appearance that's also easy to clean - bonus! Berber carpets have thicker yarns than other level loop pile carpets and come in expensive wool fibers or cheaper nylon, olefin, or nylon-olefin fibers. And finally, you've got your Multi-Level Loop Pile, same as the level loop pile but the loop heights vary - usually two to three different loop heights.
